The life and culture of the mediterranean region can be traced in exceptional arheological finds from the vela spilja (big cave), located only several hundred meters above Vela Luka. The excavated artifacts are on display in the museum collection of the culture centre bearing witness of material and spiritual development in the area for twenty millenia. Traces of ancient Greek and Roman presence are also found. Among the monuments worth mentioning are: st. Kuzma and Damjan chapel (XI century), st. John the baptist chapel (XIV century), st. Vincent chapel (XVI century)...
The Vela Luka settlement was built in a local version of a typical mediterranean manner of late XIX century arhitecture.
A mythical symbiosis of man-the fisherman and peasant with the sea and the sparse soil makes this region renowned for fishing, olives and wine.Allthat effort, sweat, joy, laughter and sorrow is reflected in the choir songs that have made Vela Luka know and famous far afield.
